The Catalina Island is twenty-one miles away from the coast of California, and many people have taken the challenge to swim across it.
On July 4th 1952, Florence Chadwick stepped into the water off Catalina Island to swim across to the California coast. She started well and on course, but later fatigue set in, and the weather became cold.
She persisted, but fifteen hours later, numb and cold, she asked to be taken out of the water.
After she recovered, she was told that she had been pulled out only half a mile away from the coast. She commented that she could have made it, if the fog had not affected her vision and she would have just seen the land.
She promised that this would be the only time that she would ever quit.
She went back to her rigorous training. And two months later she swam that same channel. The same thing happened. The fatigue set in, and the fog obscured her view, but this time she swam with faith and vision of the land in her mind. She knew that somewhere behind the fog was land.
She succeeded and became the first woman to swim the Catalina Channel. She even broke the men’s record by two hours.

Attitude towards work – Moral Story
Your life today is the result of your attitudes and choices in the past. Your life tomorrow will be the result of your attitudes and choices today!
This is a story of an elderly carpenter who had been working for a contractor for many many years. He had built many beautiful houses but now as he was getting old, he wanted to retire and lead a leisurely life with his family. So, he goes to the contractor and tells him about his plan of retiring. The contractor feels sad at the prospect of losing a good worker but agrees to the plan because the carpenter had indeed become too fragile for the tough building work. But as a last request, he asks the old carpenter to construct just one last house.
The old man agrees and starts working but his heart was not in his work any more. He had lost the motivation towards work. So, he resorted to shoddy workmanship and constructed the house half-hearted. After the house was built, the contractor handed over the front door keys to the carpenter and said, This is your new house. My gift to you. The carpenter was shocked and upset. Had he known that he was building his own house, he would have done a better job! Now, he would have to live in the house, which is not worth staying.
Think of yourself as the carpenter. You work hard every day but are you giving your best? We put our least to the work we don’t like or do not have interest in. Later, we get shocked at the situation we have created for ourselves and try to figure out why we didn’t do it differently.

Five Very Short Stories with Morals
A child told the mother: "Mum you are very beautiful today."
Replied the mother: "Why?"
The child said: “Because you did not get angry today.”
Moral of the story:
1. It is easy to possess beauty: - do not get angry.
2. Anger is temporary madness.
A man attended an interview for a job.
Along the corridor, he picked up a piece and threw it into a dustbin.
The interviewer passed by and saw it.
This man got the job.
Moral of the story:
Live with good habits, and you will be recognized.
A small boy worked as an apprentice in a bicycle shop.
A man sent a bicycle for repair.
After repairing the bicycle, this boy cleaned up the bicycle and it looked like a new one.
Other apprentices laughed at him for doing redundant work.
The second day after the owner claimed the bicycle back; this boy was pinched and offered a job.
Moral of the story:
1. Go the extra mile to be successful.
2. Doing more gains more & Doing less loses more.
The owner of a farm asked his child to work everyday at the farm.
His friend said to him: “You do not have to make your son work so hard. The crops would grow just as good."
Owner of the farm replied: “I am not cultivating my crops, but my child."
Moral of the story:
1. A simple way to groom a child is to let him experience some hardships.
2. If not cut, jade would not turn into useful ware.
A shop is always brightly lit up.
Someone asked: "What brand of bulb are you using? It is so lasting."
The shop owner replied: "Our bulbs blew out frequently. We replaced them once a bulb blew out."
Moral of the story:
1. It is simple to maintain brightness, change the bulbs regularly.
2. To brightening up everyday life: Endeavour to abandon unwholesome states of mind and make an effort to encourage wholesome states to grow.

Recession Time
This story is about a man who once upon a time was selling Hotdogs by the roadside.
He was illiterate, so he never read newspapers. He was hard of hearing, so he never listened to the radio. His eyes were weak, so he never watched television. But enthusiastically, he sold lots of hotdogs.
He was smart enough to offer some attractive schemes to increase his sales. His sales and profit went up. He ordered more and more raw material and buns, and used an attractive signboard to sell more. He recruited a few more supporting staff to serve more customers. He started offering home deliveries. Eventually he got himself a bigger and better stove.
As his business was growing, the son, who had recently graduated from College, joined his father. Then something strange happened. The son asked, "Dad, aren't you aware of the great recession that is coming our way?" The father replied, "No, but tell me about it." The son said, "The international situation is terrible. The domestic situation is even worse. We should be prepared for the coming bad times"
The man thought that since his son had been to college, read the papers, listened to the radio and watched TV, his son ought to know and his advice should not be taken lightly.
So the next day onwards, the father cut down his raw material order and buns, took down the colourful signboard, removed all the special schemes he was offering to the customers, and was no longer as enthusiastic. He reduced his staff strength by giving layoffs. Very soon, fewer and fewer people bothered to stop at his hotdog stand. And his sales started coming down rapidly, same is the profit.
The father said to his son, "Son, you were right. We are in the middle of a recession and crisis. I am glad you warned me ahead of time."
What can we take away from this story?
1. How many times do we confuse intelligence with good judgment?
2. Choose your advisers carefully but use your own judgment.
3. A person or an organization will survive forever, if they have the 5 Cs:
* Character
* Commitment
* Conviction
* Courtesy
* Courage
The tragedy today is that there are many walking encyclopedias that are living failures.
The more practical and appropriate views on this economic recession is:
"This is the time to reunite together, for any small or big organization; This is the time to motivate and retain people which are the biggest asset; This is the time to show more commitment to the customers; This is the time to show values of our company to the world;
And this is the time to stand by our Nation".

Stress Management Lesson
A lecturer was giving a lecture to his student on stress management.
He raised a glass of water and asked the audience, "How heavy do you think this glass of water is?"
The students' answers ranged from 20g to 500gm.
It does not matter on the absolute weight. It depends on how long you hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it is OK. If I hold it for an hour, I will have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you will have to call an ambulance.
It is the exact same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.
If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, we will not be able to carry on, the burden becoming increasingly heavier.
What you have to do is to put the glass down, rest for a while before holding it up again. We have to put down the burden periodically, so that we can be refreshed and are able to carry on.

He raised a glass of water and asked the audience, "How heavy do you think this glass of water is?"
The students' answers ranged from 20g to 500gm.
It does not matter on the absolute weight. It depends on how long you hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it is OK. If I hold it for an hour, I will have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you will have to call an ambulance.
It is the exact same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.
If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, we will not be able to carry on, the burden becoming increasingly heavier.
What you have to do is to put the glass down, rest for a while before holding it up again. We have to put down the burden periodically, so that we can be refreshed and are able to carry on.
So before you return home from work tonight, put the burden of work down. Don't carry it back home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you are having now on your shoulders, let it down for a moment if you can. Pick it up again later when you have rested.

GOD gives beyond our expectations - An Inspirational story
Once a boy went to a shop with his mother. The shop keeper looked at the small cute child and showed him a bottle with sweets
and said 'Dear Child..u can take the sweets...
But the child didnt take. The shop keeper was surprised.. such a small child he is and why is he not taking the sweets from the bottle. Again he said take the sweets....
Now the mother also heard that and said.. take the sweets dear.. Yet he didnt take... The shopkeeper seeing the child not taking the sweets... he himself took the sweets and gave to the child. The child was happy to get two hands full of sweets.
While returning home the Mother asked the child... Why didnt you take the sweets, when the shop keeper told you to take?..

Entrepreneur have an experience or see an opportunity or want to change some things
From Shiv Bhaskar Dravid who founded - The Viewspaper which is India's largest Youth Paper at age of 21.
So today someone asked me a question on whether it was right to become an entrepreneur straight after college. This is a question that i have been asked a number of times. In fact i was part of a discussion on the same topic at an event called Proto which is India’s premier showcase event for startups.
Let us analyze the advantages and disadvantages of starting out young, say straight out of college or maybe having just a couple of year of experience.
Advantages
* When you are young you have no pressures of supporting a family.
* When you are young you believe anything is possible
* People say you can work harder
* You have fresh ideas
Disadvantages
* As a young person you are inexperienced
* You don’t have connections and contacts
* You don’t have grey hair so its difficult to make people take you seriously
* You may not have financial strength in the form of savings.
* Because you believe you cant loose you end up making mistakes.
Quite frankly i don’t think you can just sit one day and say to yourself that from today i will be an entrepreneur. It cannot be planned. It just happens to you and it can happen at any age. It happens because you have an experience or see an opportunity or want to change some things. That’s when you become an entrepreneur.
However if i had to answer the question that should you become an entrepreneur straight out of college then my answer would be YES..definitely…. I feel everybody should try and do something on their own after college or even during it. Don’t do it to make money. Do it for the learning. Do it to have the satisfaction that you could offer a product or service that people were willing to use. Do it cause you are chasing knowledge.
Entrepreneurial experiences change the way you think. The learnings are tremendous and you grow very fast in terms of the skills you aquire and the confidence you gain.
I feel entrepreneurship is like an acid test. You will come out scarred and hurt but whether you succeed or fail you will come out stronger as an individual and as a proffessional.
I am sure many of you would have gone through or are going through some entreprenuel experiences and would have a view on this. Let me know what you think. Am i right in what i am thinking? Would love to hear from you.

What is the right age to become an entrepreneur?
So today someone asked me a question on whether it was right to become an entrepreneur straight after college. This is a question that i have been asked a number of times. In fact i was part of a discussion on the same topic at an event called Proto which is India’s premier showcase event for startups.
Let us analyze the advantages and disadvantages of starting out young, say straight out of college or maybe having just a couple of year of experience.
Advantages
* When you are young you have no pressures of supporting a family.
* When you are young you believe anything is possible
* People say you can work harder
* You have fresh ideas
Disadvantages
* As a young person you are inexperienced
* You don’t have connections and contacts
* You don’t have grey hair so its difficult to make people take you seriously
* You may not have financial strength in the form of savings.
* Because you believe you cant loose you end up making mistakes.
Quite frankly i don’t think you can just sit one day and say to yourself that from today i will be an entrepreneur. It cannot be planned. It just happens to you and it can happen at any age. It happens because you have an experience or see an opportunity or want to change some things. That’s when you become an entrepreneur.
However if i had to answer the question that should you become an entrepreneur straight out of college then my answer would be YES..definitely…. I feel everybody should try and do something on their own after college or even during it. Don’t do it to make money. Do it for the learning. Do it to have the satisfaction that you could offer a product or service that people were willing to use. Do it cause you are chasing knowledge.
Entrepreneurial experiences change the way you think. The learnings are tremendous and you grow very fast in terms of the skills you aquire and the confidence you gain.
I feel entrepreneurship is like an acid test. You will come out scarred and hurt but whether you succeed or fail you will come out stronger as an individual and as a proffessional.
I am sure many of you would have gone through or are going through some entreprenuel experiences and would have a view on this. Let me know what you think. Am i right in what i am thinking? Would love to hear from you.

(For those who don’t know who Warren Buffet is – he is one of the top 3 richest persons in the world. Born: August 30, 1930. Nationality: American. Occupation: Chairman & CEO. Berkshire Hathway. Salary: US$. 100,000.00. Net worth: US$. 37 Billion (2009).)
This what he wrote on New Year 2009. Those who have not read it..its a good ADVICE!!
“We begin this New Year with dampened enthusiasm and dented optimism. Our happiness is diluted and our peace is threatened by the financially illness that has infected our families, organizations and nations. Everyone is desperate to find a remedy that will cure their financial illness and help them recover their financial health. They expect the financial experts to provide them with remedies, forgetting the fact that it is these experts who created the financial mess.
Every New Year, I adopt a couple of old maxims as my beacons to guide my future. This self-prescribed therapy has ensured that with each passing year, I grow wiser and not older.
This year, I invite you to tap into the financial wisdom of our elders along with me, and become financially wiser.
1.Hard work: All hard work bring profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.
2.Laziness: A sleeping lobster is carried away by the water current.
3.Earnings: Never depend on a single source of income. (At least make your Investments get you second earning)
4. Spending: If you buy things you don’t need, you will soon sell things you need.
5.Saving: Don’t save what is left after spending; Spend what is left after saving.
6.Borrowing: The borrower becomes the lender’s slave.
7.Accounting: It’s no use carrying an umbrella, if your shoes are leaking.
8.Auditing: Beware of little expenses; A small leak can sink a large ship.
9.Risk-taking: Never test the depth of the river with both feet. (Have an alternate plan ready).
10.Investment: Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
I’m certain that those who have already been practicing these principles remain financially healthy. I’m equally confident that those who resolve to start practicing these principles will quickly regain their financial health.
Let us become wiser and lead a happy, healthy, prosperous and peaceful life.”

Life is one of those races in nursery school where you have to run with a marble in a spoon kept in your mouth. If the marble falls, there is no point coming first. Same with life, where health and relationships are the marble. Your striving is only worth it if there is harmony in your life. Else, you may achieve the success, but this spark, this feeling of being excited and alive, will start to die.
One thing about nurturing the spark - don't take life seriously. Life is not to be taken seriously, as we are really temporary here. We are like a pre-paid card with limited validity. If we are lucky, we may last another 50 years. And 50 years is just 2,500 weekends. Do we really need to get so worked up? It's ok, bunk a few classes, goof up a few interviews, hang out with friends, fall in love. We are people, not programmed devices.
